About the Artist

Joy Anson

Joy Anson's work has been variously described: primitive and childlike and also cubist, but with a figurative element always present in the simple imagery that she chooses, houses and village scenes, harbours and sunflowers.

Art writer and critic Richard Waugh wrote about Joy's work in a MAGAZINART piece entitled "Flattened Shapes and Perspectives".  He described Joy Anson as "an intuitive self-taught artist with a mastery of medium and a unique expression of form that discards convention and tradition in favour of imagination and invention."

Joy notes that her influences are Paolo Uccello, the Florentine Renaissance painter, and Egon Schiele, an early twentieth century Austrian expressionist.

Joy Anson attended the Peter Aspell School of Art in Vancouver.   She began to exhibit her paintings twenty-five years ago and has enjoyed significant success with a number of sell-out shows at galleries in Calgary and Toronto.  Her work is in collections across Canada, in the United States and in Asia.

Joy lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
